Race Director provides for direct results integration with the ChampionChip Timing System. ChampionChip is a transponder based system that is very effective in collecting results in running as well as triathlon / biathlon events. The transponder is a waterproof glass capsule that contains a silicon chip and an energizing coil. The "chip" (see picture above) is normally laced to the participants shoe. The ChampionChip can be used under all weather conditions, wet and dry, cold and hot.
There are no batteries in the ChampionChip. The transponder is inactive until moved into a magnetic field, generated by a send antenna in a mat. When the ChampionChip enters the magnetic field, the energizing coil produces an electric current to power the chip. The transponder then transmits its unique identification number to a receive antenna in a mat. The entire process takes approximately 60 milliseconds.

The following is an overview of where and how Race Director is connected to the ChampionChip scoring system
The master participant database can carry a participant's "personal" chip number. As a participant from the master participant list is copied into a race, the participant's last known personal chip number is also copied into the race participant file.
Not everyone will have a "personal" chip number. The ChampionChip system can produce a file of "rental" chip numbers and their associated participant bib number. This file is easily imported into Race Director. Every participant will have either a "rental" chip or a "personal" chip - it's even possible for a participant to have both. All results processing in Race Director is controlled by bib number, while time data coming from the ChampionChip system will be based on the ChampionChip ID number. Race Director has easy-to-use functions and reports to insure that the bib/chip number associations are accurate and easy to maintain.
One of the greatest advantages of the ChampionChip system is the ability to report each participant's start time as well as intermediate and finish times. Race Director imports start times directly and is capable of recognizing and accounting for the offset time between the start of the system and the start of the race (system start to start gun offset time).
Finish times are also directly importable into Race Director. In the event that intermediate times are collected on the race course, Race Director reporting will show begin-to-end race results - including the participant's pace. The ChampionChip scoring system is especially effective in Lap races (see sample reports below).
No system is perfect - especially in races that involve thousands or tens of thousand participants. Race Director contains specifically designed features to help with the most common problems.
Participants sometimes forget to report that they have a personal chip number. For this situation, Race Director will automatically establish a "bandit" participant and include the chip number as a part of the bandit's name. When the actual participant reports the problem, the switch from bandit participant to actual participant can be done in one easy step.
A late arriving participant competes in the race with a rental chip but is not set up in Race Director. In this situation, the bib number is easily derived from the bib/chip file provided by the ChampionChip system (above) and Race Director automatically sets up an "Unknown Participant" with the correct bib number. Once the actual participant's information is entered into Race Director, the results reports will be automatically corrected.
No everyone returns their rental chips. A file containing all returned chips can easily be created the the ChampionChip system and imported into Race Director. From this information, a list of those who have failed to return their chips is easily produced.
